It’s Not Personal, It’s A Restructuring” Is The Most Expensive Sentence In Corporate America.

“It’s not personal. It’s a restructuring.”

That may be the most expensive sentence in corporate America.

Because when you hear it at 55, the company is not just eliminating your job. It may be eliminating the highest-earning years in your retirement plan.

You probably did everything right.

You earned the promotions, maxed out your 401(k), built an investment portfolio and planned to keep earning until you were ready to retire.

Then the meeting appears on your calendar.

Your position has been eliminated.

The most damaging part may not be losing this year’s salary. It is losing the future savings, stock awards, deferred compensation and benefits you expected to accumulate.

A $300,000 compensation package disappearing five years early can create a seven-figure hole in your retirement plan.

This is why high income should never be confused with financial independence.

If your lifestyle and retirement still depend on your paycheck, your employer has more control over your future than you may realize.

Prepare while your income and options are still strong.

First, calculate what happens if your paycheck stops tomorrow.

How long could your reserves support you? How much of your retirement plan depends on contributions you have not made yet?

Second, stop measuring wealth only by net worth.

Ask how much income your assets could generate today—without your salary and without selling investments every month.

Third, diversify away from your employer.

Your salary, bonus, stock, health insurance and professional identity may all depend on the same company.

That is concentrated risk, even if your investment portfolio looks diversified.

Use your peak earning years to build income-producing assets outside that ecosystem.

A restructuring may not be personal to the company.

But the consequences are intensely personal to you.

The best time to prepare for the end of your corporate income is before someone schedules the meeting that ends it for you.
